Your Host Family: Though Eaton is the most common name on the island this Eaton family hales originally from Winchester, Massachussetts. Paul and Betsy Eaton discovered, and fell in love with, Deer Isle, in 1993. Over several years they purchased two houses and the land where Tides End is now. The Tides End lot was purchased in 2003. Construction began in 2005 and was a therapeutic labor-of-love for Paul. Despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer he was determined to build the house himself. Paul worked on Tides End until the last weeks of his life. The house was completed in November of 2007. Paul died in December, 2007 satisfied that his last project was complete. Paul’s love of Maine’s rocky coast was boundless. There are few mid-coast hiking and skiing trails he didn’t enjoy over the last 30 years. When not on land Paul was on the water where he was an avid kayaker. Guests of the Eaton’s enjoyed requisite kayak tours from Paul. He often said that he was happiest while on the ocean with his family and friends. Today, Tides End is kept open to guests from all over, by the efforts of Betsy Eaton, Barry Eaton (son), and Jeannette Eaton (daughter). Thanks, Dad...

Hotel in Swans Island, ME
0 miles from Stonington
If you've never been to Swan's Island before, PLEASE read our entire description. We are a very unique place and appeal to a very unique traveler. Search for the Harbor Watch Inn website for even more details. The Harbor Watch Inn is the only motel on the island. We offer four units starting at $98/night. All rooms have private entrances and can accommodate four people. Multiple units can be reserved for larger groups. For our first-time visitors, we can't stress strongly enough what a unique place Swan's Island is. If you are looking to go a little off the grid, relax, enjoy the outdoors and the simpler things in life, then we can't wait to see you. If you're looking for shopping and entertainment, this simply may not be the place for you. There are no McDonald's, no strip malls and no movie theaters. And that's exactly what makes people come back year after year! Part of the beauty of Swan's Island is that it's far enough away to serve as an escape. It does mean getting here takes a little extra planning. The island is only accessible two ways: Private Water Craft The island is home to a welcoming harbor with several private and public wharfs. Moorings are available for rent on a first come, first served basis at $25 per reservations accepted. Please contact our Harbor Master, Josh Joyce at 207-266-1937 for more information. Maine DOT Ferry Service The M/V Captain Henry Lee services Swan's Island out of the Bass Harbor terminal at the southern tip of Mount Desert Island. This ferry accommodates vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles. The link below takes you to the DOT website where you can see current schedules and rates. **If you are visiting the island during peak times, June - August, the ferry often fills to capacity leaving passengers waiting for 90 minutes or more for the next ferry. We encourage you to get in line early or spend a few extra dollars to secure one of the four reserved spots on each run. Reservations are accepted up to 30 days prior to the scheduled date of travel.** Getting from the ferry landing to the motel only requires 1 right turn and 1 left. You should reach us in about 5 minutes. If it takes longer than that, you probably missed the inn! GPS is accurate if you have a signal. Our motel does have free wi-fi, so you don't have to completely disconnect, but there are no TVs in the rooms. We encourage you to get out and about and enjoy all the natural beauty of our little island and participate in community activities. All four of our rooms offer open spaces with two beds, full bath and comfortable seating areas. All rooms also include a microwave and coffee maker along with complimentary coffee, creamers and sweeteners to start your day right! The full kitchens in Rooms Two and Four make them especially useful for longer stays. If you're staying more than one night, we highly encourage you to book one of the kitchen units as there are no restaurants on the island.

Cottage in Brooklin, ME

At the Water's Edge, this small, adorable, gray-shingled cottage perches above Wells Cove, a tidal inlet located just off Eggemoggin Reach, a wide passage connecting Penobscot Bay to Blue Hill Bay in Downeast Maine. When the tide is high (twice every 24 hours) you seem to be afloat in a well-insulated, nicely-crafted boat. Even at low tide there are watery views from every window due to the building's site on a narrow little peninsula. The classic Maine experience, enjoy kayaking from private beach. Tastefully remodeled in 1997, there are two small bedrooms on the main floor and an extra trundle bed in the loft. This cottage offers all you will need to enjoy this lovely area! Bayberry Cove shares the peninsula with another small cottage (Jennifers Cottage) screened from view by spruce trees and honeysuckle. The living room, dining area, and kitchen, sheltered by a cathedral ceiling, are entered either through the glass paneled front door or the back door that opens off the porch. The walls and wainscoting throughout are painted pinkish off-white and the rooms are decorated, quietly, in warm shades: terra-cotta, rose, and beige. A short hall leads from the living area to the bathroom (shower, no tub) and two bedrooms. Even though there is, above these three rooms, a loft area with pull-out double bed, the house is most appropriate for two or three people. The loft offers additional sleeping for occasional overnight guests. Rates subject to change. Click "Book it Now" for rates and availability.

Lodge in Stonington, ME

Spruce Island is a small, 80 acre private island off Deer Isle/Stonington, Maine. An aerial video of Spruce Island and a video of a traditional lobster bake on Spruce Island can be found on this page. The Stone House is the only house on Spruce Island. It can be rented by the week during the season which runs from Memorial Day through Early October. It can be rented into the fall by smaller groups. More than 18 people can be accommodated with prior arrangement. There are many places to explore and things to do on and around Spruce Island. Kayaks and row boats are provided. Outboard motor boats can be rented. Dress up as pirates and entertain your children (pirate dress provided); enjoy campfires on the shore; drive golf balls into the ocean and collect them at low tide; swim in a fresh water quarry on near-by Green Island owned by Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Play horseshoes, capture the flag, badminton, and pingpong. Charter our amphibious Sealegs to take you island hopping. Gaze into the heavens and see a universe of stars you can't see elsewhere because of light pollution. See bald eagles, ospreys, and many other seabirds. Experience the wonder that Robert McCloskey wrote about in the children's book, 'Time of Wonder'. The house is comprised of two separate buildings. The Main House is a large open room with cathedral ceilings, a huge fireplace, and large well equipped kitchen. There is one bedroom in the Maine House. A swing hangs from the timbers in the Main House, and a “crows nest” on the roof affords spectacular views of the surrounding islands. On rainy days and at night, you can watch movies on the big screen and listen to surround sound music in the Main House. The Guest House contains six bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Electricity is supplied by wind and solar, supported by backup generators. Water is supplied from wells and a large rain water cistern. This property is completely 'off the grid', but WiFi is available through HughesNet satellite connection and cell phone service also allows access to the internet. Kayaks and other small boats are included. A small 10hp, 13’ inflatable outboard motor boat can be rented for $550/week. A larger 18' outboard motorboat can be rented for $750 per week. Spruce Island falls within the town of Stonington, Maine, famous for fresh Maine lobster and for the pink Maine granite that has been cut from its quarries for more than a hundred years. Spruce was quarried in the late 1800's and in harmony with this history, the owners decided to build these houses entirely of large granite blocks. Tranportation to the Island: Transportation to and from the island is provided free on the first and last days, up to three round trips each of those days in an amphibious Sealegs, or two round trips in a Munson landing craft. For mid week transportation, there are a number of options. A small outboard motor boat suitable for getting back and forth to Stonington can be rented. Steve Johnson runs a charter service called Bert & I Charters. The Isle au Haut Ferry also does private ferry service to and from Stonington to islands in the area. Another option is to hire our amphibious Sealegs boat or the Munson landing craft with a captain. The cost is $125/hour. The advantage of the Sealegs is that, as an amphibious craft, it can drive out of the water and set down on the ground like a camel for easy and safe loading and unloading. This is especially nice for exploring the many uninhabited islands around the area. Island Life: There are many fun things to do on and around Spruce Island. Some examples include: Intra-island or even inter-island capture-the-flag; Camp fires on the beach; Exploring the many other small islands in the area; Sleeping in a tent near the shore is a wonderful experience for children and adults. You can sit by a camp fire and gaze into the heavens wondering how it all came to be, even catching glimpses of satellites moving across the sky, before rolling into a cozy tent and letting the gentle sounds of waves and wind lull you to sleep. Dogs are allowed with permission. Please inquire. There is a $150 fee. Dogs must be treated for fleas and ticks to prevent them from carrying fleas and ticks to the island. We offer a full-service island vacation option for those families that would like a worry-free, island vacation where everything is prearranged for them, including all meals, unlimited boat transportation with captain/guide to explore the area, including trips to surrounding islands and to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. This full service option will allow guests to avoid the stresses of planning for their vacation, to fully enjoy themselves while on vacation, and not to worry about cleaning up at the end of their stay. While not inexpensive, this option will allow guests to most enjoy themselves during their vacation. Cost depends on what services are desired, but as a rule of thumb, full service, including unlimited transportation in the Sealegs and landing craft, and full chef services, at least doubles the base rental rate. Please inquire if you are interested in learning more about this option.

Completely renovated when we bought it, our 3 bedroom log cabin comfortably sleeps 6 people, or 8 with the sleeper sofa in the living room. Two bedrooms, with king and queen beds, offer expansive views of the bay and the islands beyond, while the third, with bunk beds, offers a view of the stars through a large skylight. Twin Boulders sits on a bluff with a panoramic, bold water view of the Deer Isle Thorofare meandering through islands (such as Isle au Haut, Mark Island, Andrews Island) dotting the landscape. Built in 1922 (renovated 2008) and owned by one family since 1936, the cottage is only 50 feet from the bay/ocean (!) and surrounded by 2.2 acres of spruce and pine forest. Driveway to cottage, Firelane 79, off Sand Beach Rd., is 1/2 mile long. Sitting on the deck and taking in the sounds (lobster boats, birds, fog horn, tide), smells (ocean, pines) and sights (skyline of ocean, islands, granite bluffs, schooners, Maine-blue sky, sunsets, dolphins, seals, eagles) is an awesome experience. The living room, dining room, and 2 (of 3) bedrooms each have sliding glass doors providing great views and easy access outside. Living room features large fireplace for warmth on cold summer nights. Sand Beach is within walking distance. Grocery store (Burnt Cove Market) and town of Stonington is nearby. The cottage itself is very comfortable and attractive. How is Twin Boulders unique?: Named after the two huge boulders on its rocky shore, Twin Boulders is a unique and remarkable cottage both for its design (by architect William McHenry) and location (one of Maine’s most scenic coast-lines). Step outside on the wraparound deck and you'll be transported to the quintessential Maine experience. Facing south, you see Mark Island with its lighthouse and hear its fog horn. A little further south, marked by a ringing buoy is the ocean. Between these two markers is the Deer Island Thorofare, the main shipping lane (3-masted schooners sail by regularly) in the Penobscot Bay area connecting Camden and Bar Harbor through Stonington harbor. The cottage is right on the water, perched high on granite ledges. Sit on the deck or get even closer to the water’s edge and watch the tide pound the rocks, feel the wind, examine the sky's changing colors (so vibrant!), see the sea-faring birds (bald eagles, osprey, ducks, loons), porpoises, and seals. The Maine coastline is mostly rocky but there are some beaches. One of them, Sand Beach, is a short distance from the cottage. (Some the the scenes in The Man without a Face, starring Mel Gibson, were filmed at this lovely cove.) A visit to the town is fun. There are shops, art galleries, a museum, restaurants, a performing arts center (The Opera House), and a busy harbor where you can watch lobster boats come in at the public dock. You can purchase lobsters at the lobster co-op. If you feel like hiking, there are trails at 12 nature preserves on the island. Visit the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, an international craft school. Off island, nearby towns to explore include Blue Hill, Brooklin and Castine. Directions from town: When Main Street dead ends, turn right, and then make left at first stop sign. Go left. This is Sand Beach Rd. After about 2 miles look for turnoff for driveway on your left at Walker Point Rd. (also designated Firelane 79). Mailbox name is Dr. LeRoy Walker. Go on the driveway until it seems to end at a clearing where you will see a white house. This is not Twin Boulders. You have to bear right and follow the driveway (west) a little further to arrive at our cottage.

Sheephead Island is off Sunset Maine, a small village on the west side of Deer Island at the opening of Penobscot Bay. So close to the shore it is barred to the mainland for 6 hours at each at each low tide. It is within a very short distance to the mainland. Penobscot Bay is studded with islands. From Sheephead you look south to the open ocean. You look west across the islands to the Camden hills across the bay over which the sun sets. Most Maine islands are dark and densely wooded with beautiful but unfriendly cliffy shores. Sheephead has such spectacular shore on one side of the island, but the rest of its two miles of shore is gentler with sand and pebble beaches. Its sixty five acres are also gentle and pastoral. Besides its woods it has grassy flower filled fields and country roads and paths. Also a secluded one acre swimmable pond. Among Maine islands it is Wyethian, Christina’s world. A Maine salt water farm surrounded by water on all sides. As for convenience, not only is it a short jaunt by boat to the yacht club dock; the bar to the main land is navigable by four wheel drive half the day at low tide for access when weather, wind, sea, fog or night make boating difficult. It takes a little time to acclimatize to Sheephead Island. For that reason it is best that rentals be extended. This part of Maine is increasingly popular and high season fills up fast. Some special considerations apply. Best time to visit: Recommended is between June and Labor Day. Nearby airports are Bangor Maine, Bar Harbor, Maine and Portland, Maine. Boston, MA Logan airport is of course much further away but is certainly an option. **Price is $15,000 for the week and includes both houses". You may rent one house for $7500 but please note that there could possibly be other tenants on the island. Additionally, at least 2 of us are on the island all summer to provide any assistance or guidance that may be needed. We do not intrude on our guests, however, if you have questions or need help with something we will respond. Sheephead Island is available for weddings and other social gatherings and special purpose events but special events are not a part of this listing.
